Each patient will be under the care of a renal dietitian. The dietitians specialize in the care of patients with kidney disease and have thorough knowledge of the types and volumes of foods appropriate for patients on dialysis. They understand that each patient is unique with different medical conditions, on different medications and with different cultural preferences. Based on these factors and a patient's laboratory values the dietitian will create an individualized eating plan for each and every patient.
The dietitian will meet with each patient to gather information, create the diet plan and then educate and assist patients so that they can stay as healthy as possible. The dietitians review patients' laboratory values to monitor how they are dong and will make diet adjustments. The dietitian will also consult with the patient's nephrologists to discuss the need and benefit of medication changes. Dietitians are also able to address other digestive concerns patients may have such as loss of appetite, constipation and trouble swallowing.
